Houzz is a great resource for the kitchen and bath remodeling community. The sheer volume of pictures, coupled with the ability to sort, has replaced tearing out magazine pages to show a designer what you’d like in your home. Houzz can also give the design community suggestions on where trends are heading when it comes to color, structure and style. The “Kitchen of the Week” from Houzz this week, is from London and may show us “Yanks” some trends coming our way. Here are a few highlights and a link to the article:

Houzz Kitchen of the Week

Contemporary Kitchen

  • Transitional is the style most often used in design today. It’s cleaner, has less moldings and straighter lines. The kitchen of the week is definitely contemporary and while that’s more common in Europe, it is slowly (very!) coming to the Midwest. More and more of our customers are asking about simple, flat door styles associated with contemporary design.
  • You’ll hear the terms “frameless,” “easy access”, or “Euro Style” associated with the construction of the cabinetry. Because there is no face frame on the front of the cabinet you get a wider drawer and cabinet opening. In the past it was difficult to find a moderately priced framless cabinets of good quality. Today 2 of the 3 lines I carry manufacture a Euro Style cabinet.
  • “Restaurant at home” is a design concept that has been around a while but is being used more often. The idea is pretty simple. If you look at a restaurant kitchen there are few items behind doors. When a cook wants to plate a dish, the plate is within reach on an open shelf. While most of us want to keep food items in a cabinet with doors, displaying our everyday dishes and glassware on open shelves has some appeal.
