I have written in previous threads that the website houzz.com is a great resource for anyone thinking of remodeling their kitchen or bath. The library of pictures seems endless and if you are looking for ideas it’s the place to go. In addition to pictures, Houzz publishes articles relating to the housing industry. This week they offer advice on how to save money when remodeling your kitchen. Here’s the link:

As an industry professional, my goal is to give you everything you want within your budget. I also want you to be happy with the finished project. The first two suggestions are to buy inexpensive cabinetry or keep what you have. This may be a good idea if you are not planning to stay in your home for too long. In the long term though, you may miss out on convenience items like roll-out shelves, spice storage, garbage can cabinets, full extension drawers and the soft close feature if you don’t replace your cabinets with a good quality brand. Think of buying a used car that looks great on the outside but the radio is broken, there’s no AC and the seats are torn. At Cabinets Plus we feel you should invest in a good cabinet and save money elsewhere.

Suggestions 3  & 6 are a stretch for most homeowners. Open shelves instead of wall cabinets is a great design touch but most of us want to keep our cereal boxes behind closed doors.  Finding an existing piece of furniture to use as an island is hit and miss.

Points 4, 5, 7 and 9 are all good. Countertops of granite or quartz are costly. Laminate tops can be replaced at a  later date. Moving a sink or a range to another location in the kitchen increases labor costs and so does knocking down walls or taking out soffits. Ceramic tile for a backsplash does not need to be done at the same time you do the rest of the kitchen.

Ultimately, it comes down to your budget and that’s what we are here to help with. We’ll find the materials needed to make you feel good about your new kitchen and the price you paid to remodel.
